About
If AI changes what's possible, what should healthcare become?
Healthcare is not a system. It's a dozen industries stacked on a cacophony of transactional encounters. Built on trust and the prevention of harm — and built so that when the pieces don't connect, patients and families do the connecting. What if health becomes something more?
I'm Ben Wilson. I've spent twenty-two years inside American healthcare: Army medicine, an academic medical center, and an integrated delivery system. Patient experience, population health, operations, communicable disease, strategy execution. Most of that time has been spent on the parts of the system people don't see — the coordination, the operating models, the work of getting large organizations to do a new thing.
That experience taught me where the work goes when the system can't absorb it. It goes to families. I watched it happen in my own.
For the last two years I've also been building — agentic systems, retrieval architectures, vision models, small tools that do real work. I'm not an engineer. I design the thing, structure it, drive the build, and test it. What that has taught me is that the constraint on better healthcare is no longer entirely technical, and hasn't been for a little while now.
This publication is where I work that out in the open. The essays argue one thesis from several directions: that healthcare externalizes its coordination burden by architectural necessity, that agentic systems are the first technology capable of absorbing that burden rather than streamlining around it, and that a system which absorbs it can organize care around a person's trajectory instead of their encounters.
I'm writing this to find the people building it. If that's you, I'd like to hear from you.
How this is written
I write the prose. I use AI heavily for research, structure, citation checking, and production — the same way I'd use a good editor and a fast research assistant — but the arguments and the sentences are mine. Claims are sourced inline and listed at the end of each piece.
